Biography
Offering “a tone so pure it is almost a sine-wave” (The Wire), Adam Lion is a percussionist based in LA. A prolific collaborator, his music has been featured in The New York Times, Pitchfork Media, Artforum Magazine, and more. In 2025 Lion performed over 40 concerts in 21 states, travelling to all regions of the contiguous US. Whether it is major music festivals, DIY basements, grandiose recital halls, art galleries, or a piano bar in Tijuana, he is passionately dedicated to live performance. As a curator and organizer, he has presented musicians touring from around the world.
Notable collaborations include "Sitting on an Earthquake, Dancing on a Volcano" with Michael Pisaro-Liu and marxist theorist John Holloway, "Live at the Silver Lake Lounge" with Patrick Shiroishi and Mike Meanstreetz, "Can I get a pack of Camel Lights" with Geologoist (of Animal Collective), and "The Reinvention of Romance" with Sarah Hennies. He has collaborated closely with a diverse spectrum of artists including Harold Budd, bang on a can, Katherine Young, Laura Steenberge, Tim Feeney, Lets Paint TV, Evan Lipson, Jeongyeon Joo, Nief-Norf, and more.
Numerous organizations have funded his work including New Music USA, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the North Carolina Arts Commission. Additionally he has been in residence at New York University, Avaloch Farm Music Institute, Oracle Egg, and Lamplight AVL. Lion has been a featured performer with many organizations including the Big Ears Festival, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Duke University, the High Zero Foundation, MASS MoCA, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center.
He holds an MFA from Calarts, an MM from the University of Tennessee- Knoxville, and a B.A. from Southern Oregon University. He can be heard on the New Village Tapes, cmntx, Astral Spirits, and innova labels.
